Sail Away: My Caribbean Cruise Experience

Hey friends! I’m back!

It’s been a few months since my adventures overseas, and I recently had a chance to go on a quick trip on a cruise ship overseas to the Bahamas with my family on the Carnival cruise line for my spring break. While on the cruise I met a lot of people and had a lot of fun, but I’m going to feature some of the highlights of my trip here.

First Highlight: Cruise Ship Karaoke!

If you know me, then you know how much I love karaoke. This was definitely one of my favorite parts of the trip because I was able to do it with the help of some new girlfriends I made from North Carolina A&T. We sung Baby by Justin Bieber and No Scrubs by TLC, and we called ourselves “Black Girl Magic”. I also did my own solo tribute to one of the best known divas out there, Chaka Khan’s Ain’t Nobody. There are videos featured below.

Second Highlight: Family Time!

As you all know, I’ve been overseas for school and living in Virginia for the past two years, so the time I get to spend with my parents is few and far between. We have not gone on a trip together in almost a decade, and this trip gave us a chance to really appreciate each other and enjoy each other. This is the first of many we hope to have in the near future.

Third Highlight: Relaxation Time!

My main priority while on this cruise was to allow myself to simply be, without having to worry about where I needed to be or what I needed to be doing. I get enough of that in college! This being said, I spent my time at the fitness center, the deck, and on the balcony of my room a lot just to allow myself time to breathe. While on the cruise ship I really I enjoyed my time in the fitness center and I went to their seminars on healthy watching and their exercise classes. I was really able to spend time focusing on myself, my health, and finding my inner peace. It was something I cherished, and I plan on doing more of in my everyday life. It reminded that you can only help others if you first help yourself.

Fourth Highlight: The People!

Pretty much everyone on the cruise ship that I encountered were pleasant, and while there I became friends with some of the staff. They were mostly Pacific Islanders, and they taught me some words in Indonesian and other languages which was a really cool experience. While on the island, I spent time with one of my friends from high school who lives in the Bahamas and a girl I met who attends Norfolk State and lives in Hampton. We had a great time discovering what the Bahamas had to offer during our time on the island. Some of the places we visited includes the Warwick Hotel, Atlantis, Senior Frogs, Queen’s Staircase, and Arawak Cay. We even got specially treated to some great food and received some gifts around the island. The environment reminded me very much of South Florida, and the people’s hospitality reminded me of my time in Cameroon. The more I travel, the more I realize how alike we all are. I enjoyed every moment, and I hope to go back to the islands very soon.

Lastly, I want to share with you all some pretty cool stuff that has happened over these past couple of weeks. I was interviewed by my university about my study abroad experience and you can see what I had to say on the link below. Also, this past week I did a presentation about my study abroad program and I want to share some videos from it below. My fundraiser for the school I worked with while I was abroad is complete and the students recently received their supplies. They performed a dance and did a speech for my family members who represented me in my absence, and I have videos from it and translations of the speech below. Thank you for reading about this lovely adventure, and I cannot wait to share my next experience.

Until the next adventure!
